Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body.
Your peripheral nervous system sends information from your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of your body. Peripheral neuropathy can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and exposure to toxins. One of the most common causes is diabetes.
People with peripheral neuropathy generally describe the pain as stabbing, burning or tingling. In many cases, symptoms improve, especially if caused by a treatable condition. Medications can reduce the pain of peripheral neuropathy.
Signs and Symptoms
Gradual onset of numbness, prickling or tingling in your feet or hands that can graduate to arms and legs.
Sharp, jabbing, throbbing, freezing or burning pain
Extreme sensitivity to touch
Lack of coordination and falling
Muscle weakness or paralysis if motor nerves are affected
Heat intolerance and altered sweating
Bowel, bladder or digestive problems
Changes in blood pressure, causing dizziness or lightheadedness
Traditional Treatments
The most common traditional remedies for neuropathy usually involve the use of prescription medication, injection therapy, and physical therapy. Surgery may be needed to treat some causes of neuropathy (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome).
We know that prescription drugs can only relieve the pain temporarily, and do little or nothing to mitigate or cure the underlying condition. They may provide some level of temporary relief, but as the disease progresses, the effective dosage of the drug needed increases concurrently. As well, the side effects of these types of drugs can be difficult to deal with and add to the patient’s discomfort.
Our Treatment
At Natural State Health Center, we treat Neuropathy with a combination of Anodyne Light Therapy, Electrical Stimulation, and Supplementation with our in-house developed NeuroEase™.
Our electrical stimulation treatment opens up the nerve paths to re-educate them and allow normal signals to get through. The treatments use FDA registered equipment which sends tiny electrical signals to your nerves and muscles. These signals are an exact copy of normal nerve signals but larger, helping to wake up sleeping nerves and strengthen muscles.
The Anodyne Infrared Therapy Systems, which we use in conjunction with Electrical Stimulation, increases circulation and reduces pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms. Our Anodyne Therapy uses infrared light emitting diodes (LEDs) which penetrate more deeply into the body. While we cannot see infrared, our bodies respond to infrared with increased circulation and reduced pain.
